Recommendations | Veterinary Clinic of El Drago

Next, we offer our clients a series of useful tips, with the aim of preventing possible complications and providing them with the best veterinary care in Tenerife at the lowest possible costs.

ANESTHESIA (GENERAL INFORMATION)

Anesthesia is the specialty that allows animals to be operated and subjected to procedures without pain or suffering, seeking maximum safety and comfort. At the El Drago Veterinary Clinic, in order to minimize the anesthetic risk, we will assess your pet individually , trying to know in depth its health status before submitting it to an anesthetic.

FAST

In the hope of reducing the risk of aspirations of food content to the lungs, prior fasting is recommended before any surgical intervention on animals.

CANINE SPECIES

Before performing procedures that require general anesthesia, it is sufficient to remove the food 8 hrs before the operation, being recommended to allow them access to water until 2 hrs before.

FELINE SPECIES

In the case of our feline companions, the deprivation of solids will last from 6 to 8 hours and that of liquids, from 2 to 3 hours prior to the surgical intervention.

presurgery tests

Any procedure that requires anesthesia or sedation carries an inherent risk, even in apparently healthy animals. To minimize the risks derived from the administration of anesthetic drugs, and to have more security during the procedure, we recommend carrying out laboratory tests (blood, urine, ...), and / or image (x-rays, ultrasound, etc.). In this way, we will know in depth the state of health of our animal avoiding unpleasant situations that could have been foreseen.

Special Cares (Cats)

Good medical care, especially aimed at the prevention and early diagnosis of diseases, allows our cats to enjoy a longer and higher quality of life. For this it is necessary to take the cat to the veterinarian and unfortunately, it is not usually a pleasant experience for our feline companion. Normally, the first difficulty lies in getting the cat inside the transporter. If we can make this first step easier, generally the entire process of visiting the clinic will be less stressful. The following tips can help to make the consultation with the veterinarian easier for you and your cat.
Cats need to be familiar with their surroundings to be as comfortable and safe as possible and they need time to adapt to the unknown. They are not usually acquainted with the transporter, the car or the veterinary clinic and we must be aware that the cat needs time to get used to it. Stay calm. Cats can sense our anxiety or frustration and this can cause them anxiety or fear. The punishment or the use of force are counterproductive in the feline species. Rewarding good behaviors encourages positive behavior. For example, reward your cat when it is near or inside the transporter at home, or when you relax while touching the ears, legs or mouth (actions that the veterinarian will perform in the consultation). In this way we will associate the visit to the veterinarian with positive feelings. We can reward it with caresses, food or games.
The objective is for your cat to associate the trsnporter with positive experiences and to get used to entering it voluntarily. Place the transporter with the door open in the room of the house where the cat spends the most time, thus making it an everyday object for him. It is also important to place inside the transporter some blanket / cushion / clothes of the owner that the animal already knows. Its familiar smell will make the cat feel more secure. In the same way, the sweets could be a good stimulus for the cat to voluntarily enter the transporter. Be patient because the results may take weeks to arrive. Sometimes, in the absence of success, we must consider changing the model of the transporter. It is important not to chase the cat with sudden movements to catch it and put it in the transporter.
The carriers with a top door are a good option for those cats that are reluctant to enter, as they allow to enter them gently. An alternative is to disassemble the upper part of a conventional rigid transporter, place the jack in the lower tray and mount the upper part with the jack inside. At the time of consultation with the veterinarian, it is very useful for those animals that refuse to leave the transporter, since we can dismantle it and examine the cat inside it. There are synthetic analogs of the feline facial pheromone that helps to reduce the level of stress of the cat both to accustom it to the transporter, and for transport. In addition, some cats feel more comfortable if the trsnporter is covered during the journey with a towel or blanket, thus feeling more protected. Remember to securely fix the transporter with the safety belt to reduce swaying and braking due to driving.
Cats are very sensitive to odors, and the reintroduction of one of them after coming from the veterinarian can cause that one cat no longer recognized another and generate tension situations between them. In order to avoid aggression, it is advisable to leave the carrier closed around the clinic until it is clear that the mood is calm and everyone seems calm and peaceful. Again, the use of synthetic pheromones could be very useful. In case these recommendations fail, please contact us and we will give you other useful guidelines.
